Your Time in Amsterdam

by Amsterdam.com
Amsterdam is an attractive tourist destination featuring dozens of great museums, miles of beautiful canals, clean parks, cobblestone streets, and more hotels, outdoor cafes and friendly bars than you can count. As such, Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful and laid back cities in Europe. However, with so much to see and do, it can be difficult to choose the best activities for your visit. Here are a few suggestions as the top picks of the best ways to spend your time while in Amsterdam:

Canal Tours
Canal tours always rank high on the must-do list when you get to Amsterdam. The city’s canal system was declared a UNESCO monument in 2010, and canal tours are a great way to get a first look at the city as the tour boats cruise past the 17th-century architecture that lines the Canal Belt in concentric semi-circles that wrap around the historic City Center.

Art Museums
Amsterdam’s art museums are recognized the world over as having some of the finest collections of valuable works covering the entire scope of Dutch art history. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are just two of Amsterdam's most-visited museums and the Stedelijk Museum is a great destination for lovers of modern art: Those with alternative tastes might consider visiting museums along the Eastern Canal Belt like the Museum Van Loon, the Willet-Holthuysen Museum, the Museum of Bags and Purses and FOAM, a photography museum.

The Flowers

The Netherlands is the world's largest exporter of commercially grown flowers and no visit to Amsterdam would be complete without a stop at Keukenhof, the world's largest flower garden. Keukenhof Park is known as the Garden of Europe and features an overwhelming seven million annually planted flowering bulbs, mainly tulips, in an area covering 80 acres. Visitors can see an amazing display of tulips as well as daffodils, hyacinths, other spring bulbs as well as many different beautiful trees in bloom from the last week in March to about mid-May each year at Keukenhof.

Bicycle Rentals
About half of Amsterdam’s street traffic is composed of bicycles as they are the favorite means of transport inside the city. Tourists can easily get in on the fun of cruising the city on two wheels thanks to the availability of rental bikes all over town. Amsterdam is a very friendly city that is easy to see while touring on the many wide and safe dedicated bike lanes found throughout the city. Bikes can be rented very inexpensively at hundreds of different locations and the local automobile traffic is very accustomed to sharing the road with bikes.

Dutch Cuisine
Amsterdam has hundreds of hotels, cafes and bars that all serve distinctive food prepared in a variety of different ways. Visitors will find a menus ranging from traditional Dutch meat and potatoes comfort food to more exotic fare inspired by the Netherlands' former colonies of Indonesia and Suriname. A variety of Indonesian recipes have been enjoyed by the Dutch since colonial times and the Surinamese recipes are based on South American cuisine spiked with Afro-Caribbean, South Asian, Indonesian and Chinese flavors. These combined influences make eating out in Amsterdam an experience that shouldn't be missed.
