Amsterdam’s Dance Party
The Amsterdam Dance event takes over the city in late October for a full week of shows, conferences and parties that are all dedicated to the electronic music scene.
October in Amsterdam means it is time for the annual Amsterdam Dance Event when electronic music will once again take over the streets of the city. The event is a music conference on and about the state of the electronic music scene today, and is combined with a dance party that results in a five day long stretch of an around the clock journey into all things related to electronic music. The Dance Event runs from October 17th to the 22nd, and stretches out all across the city as the action goes in and out of some 52 different venues in Amsterdam, filling each with the sights and sounds of some of the biggest names in the electronic music genre today as well as many new and different up and coming acts that hope to be make it big in the future.
Although there are literally many hundreds of acts slated to appear this year, some of the artists who have already confirmed that they will definitely attend include Afrojack, David Guetta, Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig and Armin van Buuren, Apparat, Dave Clarke, Crookers, Sven Vath, Soul Clap, Caribou and Groove Armada in their new Red Light live show.
This year marks the 17th time the annual dance event and spectator invasion will take over the capital of the Netherlands for five long days and sleepless nights as the city officials estimate that a throng of more than 200,000 visitors will arrive in the city to participate in the popular annual event. For 2012, the Amsterdam Dance Event will include many conference sessions, master music classes, artist showcases, judging panels and last but not least, a ton of 24-hour long parties that will be held in 52 different locations across the city, all of them dedicated to electronic music. In addition to hosting the 200,000 visiting spectators and electronic music fans, the organizers have a lot of planning to do in order to successfully schedule the over 1700 separate dance artists that will converge on the city to perform music and take part in the conferences and all-night parties.
Apart from the long parties, most of the daytime programming kicks off at 10am every morning to give the party-goers a chance to catch a few winks if they can. The main conference takes place at Felix Meritis and The Dylan Hotel and then the performances spread out to other hotels and clubs across the city. The event also includes an informal school of sorts in the form of the Amsterdam Dance Event University which is really a series of interactive discussions and workshops. Needless to say, the Dance Event is not really suited for the very young, or the very old, as in addition to dealing with the crowds, attendees will have to burn the candle at both ends and put in some very long days and nights to catch even just a part of the action. If you want to attend and haven’t booked a room for this year’s event yet, it might be better to mark your 2013 calendar with a reminder to book your lodging at least a month in advance for next year’s event, as October 2012 is already upon us and finding a room close to the action at this late date will be a difficult task at best.
